SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES

Sustainable development strategies in Latvia started to be developed in 2011 as the main long-term planning documents according to which development programmes and spatial plans are prepared. Development strategies are municipal long-term policies, visions and in a way marketing material that addresses existing and potential local citizens, businesses and visitors. On the other hand, programmes are a broader and deeper view of each local government area, with municipal service and business action plans and investment projects (read more about programmes here).

Jurmala City Development Strategy in 2010 was a Grupa93 initiative which aimed to justify municipality’s long-term vision and spatial development of the city as a resort of international importance.

Our approach is to define the special and unique advantages and differences of each place and incorporate them into development strategies. For example, in Naukšēni municipality is Gustavs Klucis heritage is highlighted; in Līvāni municipality – glass heritage and industrial development areas, in Rucava municipality – sea coast popular with Lithuanians and Pape Nature Park, Vecumnieku municipality – harmony of rural life and gypsum based tourism products together with Birži district (Lithuania), Rezekne city – production practices in Rezekne special economic zone, new cultural offers in Latgalian Embassy “Gors”, Rezekneuniversity of Applied Sciences, Strenči municipality – Centre for Mental Health and Seda swamp, Riebiņi municipality – outstanding local people (Roberts Mūks, Jānis Pīgoznis, Jānis Ivanovs), rural farming and Latgalian cultural traditions, Latgale Strategy – EU Eastern border benefits, leader in cross border connection, promotion of innovative solutions for business, alternative energy production and strengthening of cities.
